I recently made the switch from Vivaldi to Firefox, for no other reason than that I wanted a change after a few years with it. I can’t say that anything really bothered me about the experience, but I like change and trying new things.
After a couple of days I realised that I miss Vivaldi’s workspaces and sessions features quite a bit. If you’re unfamiliar with them:
- Sessions let you save all tabs in a window. A session can then be opened easily later on, just like a saved file.
- Workspaces allow you to switch what you see within the same session, either in the same window or a new one. If I have a bunch of tabs open for Project X and then switch to another task, I can switch my workspace to display the tabs for Project Y instead, or to other workspaces such as “work” or “personal”.
Both features allow me to work with the tabs for as long as I need. I can keep them open as references for whatever I am doing.
Firefox has something called “Groups”, which allows me to group tabs, and there is a save option for this. However, what saving actually does is a bit unclear, as there’s no “open” or “load” to be found, only an “Recent tab groups” option. It’s hard to tell whether that lets me store 3 groups or 10, which makes a difference. While this sort of works, it’s a bit clunky to use and doesn’t give me the organisation I like.
A couple of weeks of trying something new was enough; it didn’t stick this time, simply because it didn’t match my current workflow.
So back to Vivaldi, I suppose.
